In Buddhism, dharma is the doctrine, the universal truth common to all individuals at all times, proclaimed by the Buddha<\/a>. Dharma, the Buddha, and the sangha<\/a> (community of believers) make up the Triratna<\/a>, \u201cThree Jewels,\u201d to which Buddhists go for refuge. In Buddhist metaphysics<\/a> the term in the plural (dharmas<\/a>) is used to describe the interrelated elements that make up the empirical<\/a> world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Hinduism, dharma is the religious and moral<\/a> law governing individual conduct and is one of the four ends of life. In addition to the dharma that applies to everyone (sadharana dharma<\/em>)\u2014consisting of truthfulness, non-injury, and generosity, among other virtues\u2014there is also a specific dharma (svadharma<\/em>) to be followed according to one\u2019s class, status, and station in life. Dharma constitutes<\/a> the subject matter of the Dharma-sutras<\/a>, religious manuals that are the earliest source of Hindu law, and in the course of time has been extended into lengthy compilations<\/a> of law, the Dharma-shastra<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
